While some of the siblings are trapped in dangerous situations, its all fun and games for others in this episode of The Originals.
Let’s bitch it out…
I’m starting to realize I like Finn in this body (Yusuf Gatewood) much better than the original Finn from The Vampire Diaries. The fact that he’s a force to be reckoned with against my faves on this show lately and I can still love how he frantically rattles on while setting an extremely powerful trap goes to show just had good this actor is. I’m glad he’s getting a chance to show his range these days. The beginning of the season he was sort of relegated to this role of puppy dog always following their mother (Sonja Sohn) around and doing her bidding.
Now Finn is getting a chance to stand on his own and he’s stronger (and much angrier!) than I ever thought – enough to be considered the current “big bad” of the show. Sometimes it’s easier to go back to basics in terms of the “big bad” of the season instead of getting caught up in the mythology and constantly trying to come up with something that’s badder and stronger than the original vampires. Using Finn as the current bad guy is a chance to stay relatively simple but show the power of the other members of the family.
I sincerely hope they don’t drag out this whole trapped in a different body while trapped in a haunted mental institution for witches storyline with Rebekah (Claire Holt). As you can see from the previous sentence, there is just too much going on there for me to be interested.
Umm.. how awkward is it to have Klaus (Joseph Morgan) making fun of Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) for having sex with his brother and whether she should tell her fiance of her latest little tryst?! Let’s not forget that Klaus is the father of her child, now jokingly scolding her about her love troubles. I’m thinking this is the best case scenario for a one night stand that turned in to a pregnancy. Who woulda thought that these two would end up friendly and co-parenting like champs?
Klaus does give her some interesting and sober advice though.. Makes me think he has lost his romantic side. What happened to the days that he was drawing horses for Caroline (Candice Accola) back in Mystic Falls? Now he’s telling Hayley that marriages are not built on love but well meaning lies? This is not the Klaus I know and love.
And knowing Hayley as I do after all this time, I should’ve known that she wouldn’t pay any attention to Klaus’ advice and would tell Jackson (Nathan Parsons) anyway. Sure, let’s throw away peace between two supernatural species because she wants to get something off her chest. This poor guy has been pining for her his whole life and he’s suddenly on the verge of marrying her… should’ve known that she would find a way to hurt him. Its what Hayley does. How does this guy go ahead and propose to this weirdo girl after every insensitive thing she has done to him! Its the reason why I’m never quite comfortable having her as the main female lead on this show. I need more Cami and Rebekah and less Hayley if this is going to work for me.
Other Observations:
- Cami (Leah Pipes) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) playing Trivial Pursuit has to be one of my favourite scenes this season.
- Bringing back Mikael (Sebastian Roche) only to underuse him so outrageously is ridiculous if you ask me. When he came in search of the siblings on The Vampire Diaries, he was an amazing character that they killed too early. Now they keep trying to bring him back but its like they don’t know what to do with him so they just keep him around to be a rag doll for Finn’s latest spell or whatever it is that week. None of the siblings are even worried about him in the slightest and he’s been missing for weeks. He used to be the greatest fear in their lives but now no one could even care that he’s out there. Why bother having him there at all if you aren’t going to use such a great actor?!
- Best LOL moment of the episode: Klaus to Kol “Seeing as you cast the spell and well, you’re YOU, I’d hardly call it an uncrackable case”. Joseph Morgan is always surprising me with his comedic talent. Sometimes these supernatural shows get so heavy with the history they become serious but every once in awhile, Klaus pops out with a good one liner – and its usually directed at Kohl these days. The addition of Daniel Sharman to the cast as Kol has been a delight for me. I was a fan of his from his previous show and I find that he’s a lot more natural and quick witted on The Originals, which is a win in my books.
What did you think of the return of The Originals? Are you liking Finn as much as I am despite him being the bad guy? Did you laugh out loud at Klaus’ well played one liner? Do you think Cami can help cure Elijah? Sound off below!
The Originals airs on Mondays at 8pm EST on The CW.
