Power plays and exposing secrets are the name of the game as The Originals returns with a brand new episode. So who will emerge victorious and who will be killed in the battle?
Let’s bitch it out…
Well, these supernatural beings are nothing if not predictable. I’m not sure exactly how Elijah (Daniel Gillies) thinks that this treaty for peace will actually be successful. For a guy who has been around for a thousand years, he sure is naive. Every one of those factions believe themselves to be oppressed and in need of a power grab. So why does he think that they are all going to play nice when they are all secretly conspiring behind each other’s backs? Honestly, I’m surprised Elijah thinks a little bit of chest thumping is going to keep them in line.
Let’s see if we can keep it all straight: We’ve got the witches, with Genevieve (Elyse Levesque) currently at the helm, who are trying to trick Klaus (Joseph Morgan) into giving them his mother’s spell book. We’ve got the werewolves, with Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) acting as queen, secretly working with Klaus in exchange for the moonlight rings. We’ve got the vampires, with Diego (Eka Darville) leading the troops, who are… well they aren’t really fighting for anything other than just fighting against everyone else from what I can tell.
And we’ve got the two Original brothers. One just wants peace and the other is keeping secrets and conspiring against his brother in a move to join a new family. I think this is the most bothersome of all, as evidenced by Elijah’s moving speech to his brother near the end of the episode. WHY does Klaus never get it? He only has one sibling left by his side, one person who has weathered all manner of storms with him for a thousand years and that’s not good enough? Now Klaus wants to jump ship for another family (of werewolves) simply because he still thinks of himself as the bastard child? Cry me a river, Klaus. Get over yourself. If nothing else, have a little respect for the one person who has always stood by you.
Speaking of people not giving Elijah the respect he’s due: let’s tackle the baby mama. It’s no secret how I feel about Hayley. The way she can be so holier than thou and turn up her nose at him one second, and then be calling for him in the chaos of murder the next… pick a lane, sweetie. You can either be pissed at him for reasons unknown, or you can keep your relationship with him. But you can’t have both and just toss around his emotions whenever it suits you. Because that leaves my main man standing in the shadows, making sure that annoying harlot is ok while she laughs it up with her peeps and lets Jackson (Nathan Parsons) feel the baby kicking. Nobody puts Baby in a corner!!!!… or Elijah in the shadows…
Ok. Moving on to the next unrequited love story: my favourite couple since Klaroline. Though I don’t think one can actually call Klaus and Cami (Leah Pipes) a couple yet, I’m standing firm that there is love there. Those tears were about her betrayal of Klaus, not about her uncle and you will not convince me otherwise! The writers – and Joseph Morgan – are so brilliant sometimes that it surprises me. I was so angry at Klaus and what feels like him just jumping ship, leaving Elijah on his own, then everything turns around and we get a beautiful scene between Klaus and Cami where he shows his feelings and his betrayal. She is the only person who could betray him like this and he doesn’t threaten her or hurt her or leave her. He simply shows her his pain. Sigh. There is hope yet.
Other Observations:
- Can someone please explain to me why Diego and his band of vamps joined Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) at the end? They act like the wronged party, when they’re the ones who did all of the killing. AND it was Marcel that pushed them by sending the musical sacrifice. So Marcel really causes the dissolution of the treaty, and the people who break the peace come to him in search of retaliation against the Originals… for what exactly? Everyone to blame is standing right there at Thierry’s (Callard Harris) funeral.
- Speaking of which: RIP Thierry. I will not miss you or your ever-present newsboy cap.
- OMG! Is it true? Is it finally almost over? Did Hayley actually reference her due date? One month left! Oh wait… just as I predicted. Just in time for May sweeps and the finale. <le sigh>
- I’m excited for the due date because I don’t believe that the writers will let the witches succeed in killing the baby. All supernatural business aside, it’s still a baby. One we have been waiting an excruciatingly long time for, so having the witches kill the baby at the last second would cause a revolt…with this reviewer leading the charge.
Where do we go from here? Is this the beginning of an all-out war between the species? Who do you think will win? Do you think Klaus and Cami will ever get together? Do you think the baby will be killed? Sound off below!
The Originals airs on Tuesdays at 8pm EST on The CW.
