March box office is already riding high thanks to last week’s Logan, so can the hot streak continue?
Let’s bitch it out…
After a lacklustre February, the box office finally woke up with the debut of Logan, which made the top 5 list of top grossing R rated debuts of all time. Clearly there’s still a lot of affinity for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but can he handle the king of the apes? The battle lines are drawn as March looks to keep the hot streak alive with another powerful BO weekend.

Kong: Skull Island (Wide)
- Cast: Tom Hiddleston (High Rise), Samuel L. Jackson (Deep Blue Sea), Brie Larson (Scott Pilgrim vs The World)
- Official Synopsis: When a scientific expedition to an uncharted island awakens titanic forces of nature, a mission of discovery becomes an explosive war between monster and man.
- Good for fans of: Godzilla, Jurassic Park and the Vietnam War
- Is it worth your time? By all accounts, yes. The early reviews are very positive, though some critics have suggested that the film overcompensates in its attempts to distance itself from the less-well received Godzilla reboot. Still, the cast and effects looks rock-solid, so expect quality on product and box office figures on par with recent Planet of the Apes films.
Raw (Limited)
- Cast: It’s a fully french cast: Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Oufella, Laurent Lucas, Joana Preiss, Bouli Lanners, and Marion Vernoux
- Official Synopsis: Everyone in Justine’s family is a vet. And a vegetarian. At sixteen she’s a brilliant student starting out at veterinary school where she experiences a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her family principles and eats raw meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge…
- Good for fans of: French extreme horror, coming of age dramas, dark comedies
- Is it worth your time? I certainly think so: my TIFF 2016 film review for Bloody Disgusting was pretty much a rave (so much so that rumour has it a quote may even show up in the ads for the film). So take that as a strong recommend…if you have a strong stomach for some squirm-inducing body horror.
Personal Shopper (Limited)
- Cast: Kristen Stewart (Adventureland)
- Official Synopsis: Maureen (Stewart) is a young American in Paris making her living as a personal shopper for a celebrity. Also, she may have the psychic ability to communicate with spirits, just like her twin brother, Lewis, who recently passed away. Maureen soon starts receiving mysterious messages coming from an unknown source.
- Good for fans of: Artsy foreign thrillers
- Is it worth your time? Seems like it. Stewart is unfairly tainted due to her lacklustre work in the Twilight films, but her independent comedies and dramas display genuine acting chops. The reviews for this film are decent and her performance, in particular, is being singled out by critics as exemplary.

That’s it for this week. Next week brings a live action adaptation of a Disney classic and the sequel to a classic British crime film.
Logan is to be seen by me this weekend and I’m eager to see if my friends that enjoyed them were not lying.
I do want to see Kong though. That looks like fun.
