The truth about Danny’s (Ben Mendelsohn) activities come out and the Rayburn siblings are forced to scramble in a tense and manipulative episode of Bloodline.
Let’s bitch it out…
- So, just to be clear, there’s no sense of anonymity for recovering addicts in the Keys? Because both John (Kyle Chandler) and Meg (Linda Cardinelli) have harassed Carlos (Eliezer Castro) at his meetings like it’s no big deal…and it kinda is.
- Anyone else think that Marco (Enrique Murciano) will be the one to discover that Meg is lying? Now that he’s basically inherited John’s case files, he could be the one to crack everything open.
- Was anyone else surprised that John is in on the plan to deceive Clay (Bill Kelly) and the DEA in order to smuggle the coke off of Rayburn property? That was a good bait and switch – cleverly edited in such a way to make it seem as though Meg and Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) had acted behind John’s back.
- Doesn’t John’s brilliant plan kinda fall apart if he is seen dropping his brother off at the bus station hours after he’s been brought in for questioning? I mean, John himself insisted to Clay that Danny be followed.
- Also: Wouldn’t everyone in the family be tailed considering their proximity to both Danny and the fact that the drugs were supposedly held on the family property? Especially when Clay wonders whether John was involved in the leak that allowed Ravi to escape last week?
- I feel foolish that I didn’t realize that Danny’s delusions of adult Sarah (Mia Kirshner) were probably tied into his lack of medication. Did anyone else figure that out?
- So glad that Belle (Katie Finneran) comes back for a single scene to announce she’s leaving. The wives have really been misused on this series, no?
- After several episodes of burgeoning rebellion on Jane’s (Taylor Rouviere) part, the narrative pays off when Danny takes her out on the boat and appears to drown her as payback for what John did to him. While I doubted that the writers would have Danny cross that line, I won’t lie that the last fifteen minutes were done filmed, edited and acted expertly enough to make me doubt myself. The master stroke is the manipulative cut: Danny pushes her Jane’s head under the water in what could be construed as either a playful or malicious move, following by a quick cut to John and Marco in a sequence purposefully designed to delay revealing the status of Jane’s safety until the last moment of the episode. Ultimately she’s fine, but it’s a helluva sequence.
- The truth about what happened with Sarah is less sensational than I expected. Danny dropped the seahorse necklace into the ocean and Sarah’s hand got stuck in a crevice trying to retrieve it. It’s a depressing revelation because it confirms that her death was truly an accident that Danny is in no way responsible. And yet, as we’ve seen, the circumstances around her death have rocked the Rayburns to their core and wrecked all of their lives. How did you feel about finally learning how Sarah died: underwhelmed? Pleased that Danny is, in fact, innocent?
- So Danny isn’t going anywhere, but – as AV TV Club wonders – how does he plan to survive now that Lowry (Glenn Morshower) is out for blood.
- Love this comment from Vulture: “Honestly, bad stuff happens because this family is drunk 24/7.” Truth. There’s a drinking game to be played trying to go toe to toe with the Rayburns heavy drinking.
