Things start falling apart on Blood & Oil as Billy (Chace Crawford) and Hap (Don Johnson) have a falling out and Koala 1 comes up empty. Does this mean the viewers have an oil war to look forward to?
Let’s bitch it out…
Since it’s Canadian Thanksgiving, I’m going to focus on the positives first (we all know this isn’t how I usually roll, but let’s give this a shot!). First and foremost, the addition of the best new character – Finn (Wilson Bethel). Now, let me be upfront and honest here. I say he’s the best new character solely because he and I have a history (although he might not know it). Bethel played my favourite character Wade on Hart of Dixie for the show’s four seasons (#longlivetheHart). I support any endeavour Bethel chooses to be a part of, especially when it means I get to write about him. Now about the character on the show: I find it a little fishy that he coincidentally begs for a chef job from Jules (India de Beaufort) in front of Cody (Rebecca Rittenhouse) and not two days later he’s got the food truck they need to make a successful business? Um…whatever. Like I said, I support Bethel.
Next, I cannot tell you how excited I am that the bright and shiny bromance between Hap and Billy has crashed and burned. In last week’s review, my biggest problem with the show is how these two unlikely partners also became friends in just a few days. So I am relieved that this is just the result of Hap pulling a fast one on an unsuspecting Billy. The whole thing felt false and rushed so this betrayal acts like a big sigh of relief. Now we’ll get to see the real competition between the smart-but-small-town kids and the egotistical oil tycoon.
Unfortunately that’s about all I’ve got for positives, so let’s get to the good stuff. And by ‘good’, I really mean “I almost barfed in my mouth watching Hap and Jules have sex.” I’m sorry… no actually, I’m not sorry at all. The guy is twice her age, he comes to apologize four years too late and bam! Jules is ready to fall back in to bed with Hap while she’s also having sex with his son? Gross, gross, gross. Hap and Jules have zero chemistry together, and that’s really saying something ’cause Jules is smokin’ hot. I totally buy Don Johnson as the billionaire oil tycoon, but as an adulterer sleeping with his son’s girlfriend? Nope, nope, nope.
Just to keep things interesting, we’ve also got AJ (Adan Canto) sneaking around on a secret mission…that will be revealed in a later episode. Clearly he’s a plant in Briggs’ organization, but I’m not exactly sure what he’s looking for. It all felt very Erin Brokovich to me when he’s testing mud samples from truck tires and having clandestine meetings in diners. Is AJ looking for poison in the dirt? Some kind of tampering with the oil? Who knows! Stay tuned to this channel.
Naturally, in a plot from every show ever, AJ is going to use Hap’s daughter Lacey (Miranda Rae Mayo) to get the information he needs. Sigh. I hope there’s a bit more to this sneaking around and taking samples rather than simply the betrayal of the rich daughter. Been there, done that. And I’ll be honest – Lacey is too annoying to take on a bigger part of the show. That’s what I’m really struggling with here.

Other Observations:
- The fact that there’s no oil in Koala 1 can be seen from a mile away, especially when Billy pretty much begs Hap to be a part of it. Billy literally gave every last cent they had, plus his stake in the previous deal, to get in on it. He is so sure that Koala 1 is too good to pass up, but it’s never clear what he’s basing that on. Two weeks ago, the kid aimed to own a laundromat and now he’s a savvy businessman that can predict oil patterns? I don’t think so. Plus the big spectacle of the drilling was the nail on that coffin. If that wasn’t foreshadowing, I don’t know what is.
- This whole oil tanker business is getting tired. Last week when Gerry (Paul Rae) went off the reservation and killed that dude it happened too fast, too furious for me. Talk about going zero to sixty. Now he ignores Wick (Scott Michael Foster), tries to run the sheriff off the road and hangs around town poppin’ bottles of champagne? Why don’t you just take out a billboard that screams “I did it!”. Now Wick is back in the bosom of daddy and Gerry is in jail ready to rat him out. This is another plot that I could write with my eyes closed. I sincerely hope this somehow surprises me.
